Ausgabe der Bundesländer-Serie ist der ältesten gotischen Kathedrale Deutschlands gewidmet – dem Magdeburger Dom. Die Kathedrale ist das Wahrzeichen der Landeshauptstadt Magdeburg und beherbergt das Grab von Kaiser Otto I. dem Großen. Der Dom wurde über einen Zeitraum von 300 Jahren ab 1209 erbaut, die Fertigstellung der Kirchtürme erfolgte jedoch erst im Jahr 1520. Die Türme sind 99,25 m und 100,98 m hoch – damit ist der Dom, dessen offizielle Bezeichnung « Dom zu Magdeburg St. Mauritius und Katharina » lautet, einer der höchsten Dome in Ostdeutschland. Der Entwurf der Münze stammt von dem Künstler Michael Otto und zeigt die Nordostansicht auf den Magdeburger Dom. Im Design enthalten sind außerdem die Aufschriften « 2021 », « Sachsen-Anhalt » und das Münzzeichen „A“ (Berlin). Der Münzrand enthält die Inschrift « Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit ».
