ANTIQUE STERLING ENGRAVED RISQUE’ HAND PAINTED PANEL MATCH SAFE / FOB DATED 1895 ANTIQUE 3-DIMENSIONAL RISQUE’ HAND PAINTED PANEL HAND MADE ENGRAVED STERLING SILVER MATCH SAFE / WATCH FOB MAKER HALLMARKED & DATED 1895 This is a combination of a small antique match safe container for match sticks and watch fob featuring a 3-dimensional raised hand painted panel with a risqué Cancan girl. During this late Victorian “gay 90’s” period, risqué gentleman’s accoutrements such as this became available for rakish Gentlemen of means who had an appreciation for the Ladies and would present this piece in a Victorian flair with another gentleman to share their common interest with a naughty image. In the 19th & early 20th Centuries, almost all men of this period smoked; and this container held the wooden match sticks that could be struck on just about any surface to be lit. Obviously, these matches needed a secure metal container to carry them around; and this eye appealing design was created to be stored in a gentleman’s vest / jacket pocket or on the end of a watch chain. This unusual 3-dimensional sterling silver engraved antique Gentleman’s small match safe / watch fob was considered risqué` for a Gentleman and is only 1 1/2″ tall x 1 /16″ wide x 1/2″ thick. Weight is .6 ounces or 19 grams. The front panel has a hand painted enamel 3-dimensional raised oval panel depicting a racy dance hall cancan girl with a low-cut corset, stockings, and flared skirt. The front and back are hand engraved in a leaf pattern. The inside top has the sterling and letter date marks and shows very slight remnants of the original gold wash, and the inside base has untouched patina that has not been cleaned. There is a small dovetail type hinge at the top left side that allows the bottom and top cover to open and close. Both the top and bottom align properly, and the spring opens and closes the match safe properly. The side has a small ring for attachment to a watch chain as a fob. The bottom has a recessed serrated embossed channel that acts as the strike plate for strike anywhere matches. This piece is Maker marked on the front inside protruding lip that aligns the top and bottom. The English silver marks J.G Ltd. are for Joseph Gloster Ltd., Lion Silver Works, Hockley Hill, Birmingham, Birmingham city mark of an anchor, lion sterling mark, and the date letter k for 1895. Overall, this piece this piece is in good condition, but remember, is 129 years old, and has numerous small dents on the top and edge of the cap, and on the side adjacent to the round attachment ring. However, it displays well from the front and still has an eye appealing risqué look and would fit into any watch fob, match safe, vesta, tobacco, gambler, or Sporting Gent display; and could still be used today.
