eBay For sale is an antique 18th century Georgian period brass wine tasting bowl with elegant embossed design and an early loop and tab handle. The brass is beautifully hand hammered into shape. The bottom contains much of the original silver plating, while the top has lost almost all of it due to prolonged use. This would be the rare early silver plated piece shortly after the invention of the technique in 1740s. Thick brass material with Great even metal patina that speaks for its old age. Very unique and beautiful piece! There is a small maker’s mark on the handle, “Vve. D.” (the widow D) in French. So, it suggest that the Hallmark is used by a Silversmiths’ Widows in the Kingdom of France in 18th Century. In the Kingdom of France, no region excluded, no woman in the 18th century could be appointed a master Silversmith. However, many wives of master Silversmiths were themselves daughters of Silversmiths and participated in the day-to-day management of the workshop alongside their husbands. If they rarely practiced the trade, at the least they were cognizant of the techniques the accounts, and/or the relationships with the clientele. The premature death of the husband was a dramatic event for his widow who was likely to lose any immediate source of income. The punches of the deceased husband had to be destroyed. A widow who received permission to continue the trade of Silversmith was obliged to adopt a new punch. Vve + Initial of the deceased husband. The V means « Veuve de… » (Widow of…) followed by the initial of the dead master (the first letter of his surname). The Square cartouche touch-mark represents a woman’s head in profile wearing a mourning cap. Overall, this is fascinating example of early brass work with a unique origin (of a widowed silversmith’s wife) . It demonstrates the ingenuity and practicality of early metal smith craftsmanship. It would be a great conversation piece at an antique wine bar. It measures approximately 3” in diameter for the bowl, and 4.5” wide including the handle tab. It is about 1” deep. Excellent condition. No damage of any kind is observed. Surface oxidation and imperfections are to be expected. Please study the photos carefully for detailed condition.
