About us Samurai Museum has been dealing with antique Japanese swords and other antique items once used by Samurai since 2016 and started to sell items on eBay in 2019. Antique Nara Tsuba for Samurai Sword with NTHK Certificate (T-529) INCLUDED: Wooden box, Cushion, NTHK Kanteisho Certificate NOT INCLUDED: Tsuba Stand Title: Edo Nara-style, Yasai Zu Signature: NO SIGNED Age: middle of the Edo period Material: Iron Description This Tsuba is recognized by the NTHK certificate. According to the certificate, this Tsuba was made by an Edo Nara (江戸奈良) school metalworker. This school produced a large number of affiliated schools. It is said the Nara school is one of the most important schools in the neighborhood of metal engraving in Japan. The first and second Nara lived in different occupations. And finally, the third initiated producing sword mountings such as Tsubas and Kozukas. Many Nara-style Tsubas are made from iron, and its school artisans incorporated various themes and tried to express them with new techniques. At that time, other prominent schools served the upper class as the Bakufu Okakaekou (幕府お抱え工, metalworkers who worked for Shogunate-class officials). In contrast, the Nara school aimed at the general class and incorporated novel techniques and designs. According to a theory, this is how this school has received widespread support from the public. The Yasai Zu (野菜図, vegetable design) is the theme of this Tsuba. We think the carved ones are the Tougarashi (唐辛子, chili), Kaki (柿, Japanese persimmon), and Endou (豌豆, pea/snow pea) in order from the top. The elegant orange color of chili is made of Sango (珊瑚, coral). Japanese persimmon is an autumn fruit that bears bright vermilion fruits. Since persimmon trees have long lives, Japanese people thought that the persimmon motif represents longevity. Also, another theory says that the Japanese name of persimmon Kaki (written as 柿) was associated with the word Kaki-Atsumeru (かき集める, gather). So, this idea says the persimmon design would gather happiness. These auspicious meanings might have inspired this Tsuba’s design. Based on the content mentioned above, it is interesting and convincing that these kinds of subjects that are familiar to people’s lives were incorporated as motifs for this Tsuba. Authentication Paper: NBTHK Hozon Certificate NTHK, also known as NPO Nihon Touken Hozon Kai, is the oldest organization for sword authentication of Japanese swords in modern times. It was established in 1889 during the post-Samurai era. They authenticated the Tsuba on Oct 16th in the 4th year of Reiwa (2022). The purchaser will receive this original certificate as well.
