This auction is for Gaze Vol. 2 No. 23 from from Humorama, Inc. from February 1959. This is a digest sized magazine. Martin Goodman, publisher of Timely/Atlas/Marvel comics published an extensive array of publications. They ranged from pulps of all types to standard magazines. One area that he was prolific in was the cartoon/joke book adult digests. He created the title Humorama as an umbrella for all of these publications. From the 1940’s he was producing various digests that featured one panel cartoon art pieces, jokes, funny stories and the ever present scantily clad female. He put his brother Abe in charge of this division and he ran it, I believe, until these books lost their market and were cancelled in their entirety. It is said that Abe Goodman had one of the most extensive collections of cartoon art and exotic photos in the publishing business. It was not unusual for these items to be reused several times amongst the various titles. In the earliest incarnations the females ranged from famous strippers like Blaze Starr to famous models like Bettie Page. Most of the poses were sensual and exotic but were not too risque. As these series progressed and the mores of the country changed, most models would appear in various poses of undress. The best part of these books is finding some great cartoon panels from some of the most famous comic book artists of the time. Most issues feature work by Bill Ward, Dan DeCarlo, Bill Wenzel, Kirk Stiles, Jefferson Maschamer and many more. It is really nice to find some hidden gems by the great Jack Cole. Goodman bought numerous panels from Cole before he went to work full time for Playboy. Most of these are signed « Jake » or remained unsigned but are easily identifiable with Cole’s fine line work. These books are gaining in popularity and demand is high. This issue features a photo cover of three different models. This features four pages of Bettie (Betty) Page, the most famous pin-up queen of the 1950’s. This has a variety of strippers, like Taffy O’neil (spelled O’neal) and Anita Ventura along with dozens of other models. Typical risque humor cartoons from a lot of second tier artists. This is a nice book in Very Good/Fine condition. The only real problem is some foxing along edges. It shows up in the scan much more than reality. Other defects associated with grade. With that information take a look at the large scan to determine grade for yourself. Bettie Page books are always in high demand and demand a premium over most books. I have priced it at what I consider the low end of value. This would be a great book to add to your collection.
