eBay “Primitives” by C. Don Ensor, Plate XXXIII, copyright 1983 Donart Incorporated signed limited edition print overall size 23” x 17 3/8” Print info: The Log Cabin is full of PRIMITIVES! It sits on the back of the lot at the residence of Mrs. Artie Mary Lee in Shelbyville, Ky. I could compose paintings from the objects in the cabin for several years without duplication! All the items relate to the pioneer and early farming days of our country. They are all authentic, collected by and given to Artie Mary Lee over the years. She has about 20 chairs in the cabin, and regular tours and groups visit her to hear her explanation of the most interesting items in her collection. She knows by heart some very interesting tales. Genny and I visited for several hours, and after much consideration, we selected the items which appear in this print. All the items date back to the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Our first meeting with Artie Mary Lee was at an Art and Craft Fair for the members on the First Baptist Church in Shelbyville, Ky. She was exhibiting beautifully decorated eggs, some paintings and other handcrafts. But after all, what can you expect from a person maned Artie Mary. Starting at the left of the painting, the black object resembling a popcorn popper was used to scoop HOT COALS from the fireplace and transport them where another fire was need. “Have you come to sit a spell or have you come to borrow fire” were words used in a pioneer song. Behind the hot coal carrier is a FOUR-CANDLE MOLD. After hand-twisted wicks were threaded through the openings in the tops of the mold, melted tallow would be poured into them and cooled. Candles were a very important source of light to the pioneers. The two pieces resembling a horse show in front of the coal carrier is an OX SHOE. The Ox as split hooves, thus the two pieces for each hoof. Oxen were the beasts of burden for many pioneers, pulling wagons and plowing the newly cleared fields. The CLAY JAR or CROCK was used as a utility jar. Water was probably the most common liquid stored in it, but milk or cider would be stored in it also. It has a subtle blue and tan glaze. The blue-green HAND BLOWN GLASS BOTTLE was most likely used to carry brandy. This type of bottle might have been used by gentlemen during their travels by stagecoach. Being hand blown, it is not precisely shaped. The wooden doll-like object in front of the glass bottle is a ROPE TIGHTENER. The pioneer beds were strung with rope to support the bedding, and the TIGHTENER would be used to twist the ropes to remove the sag resulting after several weeks or months of use. The CAST IRON COOK POT in the right background was an ever-present utensil in the pioneer fireplace. Even today, dried beans cooked in such a to yield a taste not to be surpassed by the use of any modern cooking utensil. I would imagine venison stew was the most prized food item to be prepared in this pot. The WOODEN MAUL in the front of the cook pot was an all-purpose hammer. It was used primarily to install the iron rims around the outer perimeter of the wooden spoke wagon wheels. The item resembling a steel trap or croquet wickets is a BREAD TOASTER. Slices of bread were inserted in the “wickets” and placed on the hearth to be toasted. As the bread browned on one side, it oculd be turned to expose the untoasted side to the fire. Appearing in the right foreground are PAW PAWS. Also known as “Kentucky Bananas” in this area, they ripen in late September and early October. Like persimmons, frost tends to improve the ripening, and taste. It has a very sweet pungent smell, which took several days to leave our car after having them in the trunk for a period of time. I much prefer our apples, pears and peaches to the PAW PAW, but I’m sure the pioneers valued this fruit very much. I hope my descriptions of the articles I have painted will help you understand and appreciated this print. These items are unique an very hard to find, and few people will have the opportunity of ever viewing the real thing. Thank you.
